This workshop demonstrates how to build the indexing and query backend of a location aware application using freely available open source tools - Python and Redis.  Python is used to build software to parse parse data from publicly available JSON data feeds and index the geospatial components of that data in Redis.

Using public General Bike Share Feed (GBFS) data for illustration, this workshop traces the development of a parser/loader to take bike share station data from a static feed and use geospatial indexing to provide access to station and system data based on a variety of geographic queries. At the end of the workshop, developers should understand the geospatial indexing functions provided by Redis and be comfortable enough to generalize the code and techniques used in the bike share example to their own applications. This presentation is intended for beginner to intermediate developers - no prior knowledge of Redis or geospatial data processing is assumed.  The session assumes attendees are comfortable with basic Python development in a Mac OS or Linux environment.
