If you've ever looked at your medical records, you have some idea about how complex, repetitive, and just plain voluminous it is! Now imagine your doctor spending some of their precious 15 minutes with you in the clinic going through your extensive medical records just to understand your state of health when you walk in the door. In order to address this challenge, IBM has sent Watson off to "medical school" and developed tools to help clinicians improve the efficiency and efficacy of their practice. Insights for Patient Data specifically looks at the entirety of a patient's electronic medical record and is able to identify the problems contained in the record that patient is facing, summarize the history of their care around those problems, and allow for natural language exploration of the record. In this talk, I will explore some of the user interface and user experience challenges that we have faced throughout this process and focusing on beginning stages of medical annotation. As a user interface and user experience engineer with a background in healthcare, technology, and engineering, I will take you through the ups and downs and surprises of developing and deploying Watson for medical professionals.
